Coast to Coast: Race for the Totem Pole of Truth
Written and designed to appeal to the Alberta Education Social Studies needs of children from Grades 1-6, this production is specifically designed to focus heavily on the curriculum studied in Grades 2 and 5. The production addresses this curriculum by:
- Exploring three distinct communities in Canada - an Inuit community, a prairie community, and an Acadian community - and examining how these communities are defined through geography, culture, language, heritage and resources. This production explores the relationship between the land, places and people in Canada.
- Promoting an understanding and appreciation for individuals and groups, and their contribution to a community. It encourages students to reflect upon and foster an appreciation for the vastness of Canada as a nation, and the exceptional diversity within its landscape and communities. It also encourages students to be proud of their individuality within a community, but also as members of a strong collective group.
As three unlikely animal comrades embark on a race across Canada, they are eager to leave their communities behind, hoping to find their answers from a magical totem pole - an outcome promised to them by a deceptive raven. As their race for answers continues, they realize that each possesses certain skills that can aid the group in making another step toward their destination. They come to recognize that perhaps the answers they are racing for can be found right under their noses, sometimes even in their own backyards.
This show emphasizes the abundance of diversity within the Canadian landscape, as our three friends come from various backgrounds (prairie, Acadian and Inuit). It is important for these friends to see the diversity of their country, but also to realize that their own community is very important, both to them and to the country as a whole. They realize that the answers they seek don't need to be found through magic, but that the real magic is being able to see the strength within themselves. They recognize that the power to improve their lives lies directly within their own individuality, strengthened by their bond of friendship.
