Saving the Rock!

This production was designed to appeal
to the Alberta Education Social Studies needs of children from
Grades 1-6, while focusing heavily on the curriculum studied in
Grade 4. The production addresses this curriculum through:

  • Exploring the history of Alberta through the method of storytelling - a very important technique for issue exploration spanning all grade levels of the Social Studies curriculum.
  • Promoting the understanding of Alberta's diversity in terms of history, geography, climate, culture, natural resources and the environment. Children are encouraged to learn and understand the importance of these factors before making decisions about their world.
There is a strong emphasis on understanding the opinions and history surrounding important issues, so that more knowledgeable, logical and appropriate decisions can be made. It is this understanding that encourages young people to see all sides of an issue before making a quick decision in their own lives - a decision that may affect others in ways not initially realized.

As the production begins, "The Big Rock" outside Okotoks takes on a life of its own as it embarks with students on an expedition to save it from destruction. A journey into the past encourages children to learn the history of Alberta and the significant geological, cultural and environmental forces that shaped this province. In an effort to teach children the importance of its existence, the Rock uses storytelling, narratives, Aboriginal legends and music to relate its message of historical significance. These techniques teach children the importance of looking deeper at a person or an issue in order to more fully understand its complexity.
